Paul "Pink Frosted" Palmer has been a member at Equity for just over 2 years now and he has been a wonderful addition to our community. Paul is 58 years old married with kids and grandkids and owns his own business.
Paul and I work one on one on Wednesdays 3 times a month. We use this time to build skills, improve techniques, and work weaknesses. While resting between sets, and Paul contemplating how to best use my "always positive and constructive" criticism, we have time to get to know each other and tell some stories.
This late summer or early fall between sets of pullups or toes to bar Paul told me about an adventure he had recently. There are some waterfalls back in the woods that Paul likes to go hiking to from time to time and on this morning Paul decided to take a few of his grandkids with him on the hike to see the waterfalls and do some exploring.
The terrain is rocky with changes in elevation, hence the waterfalls, and it is in the woods so there are logs, bushes, trees, and roots. Taking a few kids on a hike like this would be a handful for anyone. At 59 Paul does not hesitate where others his age would not go on this hike without another adult let alone with kids.
During the hike one of his grandkids fell and hurt himself. The injuries were minor, however, being 6 years old he needed to be carried back to the car. Other individuals 59 years old or not, would have needed help to carry the 45 pound child back, however, Paul knew he had the strength and work capacity to carry his grandkid through the woods over rocks and logs, up and down hills back to the car.
Stories like this show us why we do CrossFit and why being well rounded in all 10 general physical skills at all ages is a good idea.
